Constituents:
Essential oil, phenolic acids (rosmarinic, chlorogenic, caffeic), flavonoids, minerals.
Lemon balm
Melissa officinalis L.
Effects and Use:
Used internally for calming, sleep aid, and nervous digestive complaints. The essential oil provides the sedative and antispasmodic effects, though its composition varies by location and harvest time. Freshly harvested or tincture-based preparations are more effective than dried herb.
Rosmarinic acid adds antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory effects — used in topical creams for herpes or eye drops for tired eyes. Lemon balm baths help promote relaxation and calm.
Tea Preparation:
Internal: Pour 150 ml boiling water over 2–3 teaspoons of the herb. Steep 5–10 minutes, strain. Drink 2–3 cups daily, including before bed.
External: For baths, steep 60 g in 1 liter of water, bring to a boil, steep 10 minutes, strain, and add to bath.
