Effects and uses:
The leaves have anti-inflammatory, disinfectant (antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral) and astringent properties.
Used as a gargle, it is highly effective against mouth ulcers, mouth and throat infections and to strengthen the gums.
Used internally, it reduces excessive perspiration and aids digestion.
It is also useful for mild diarrhoea.
Ready-to-use products are also available (mouthwash, toothpaste, lozenges, etc.).
Preparing the herbal tea:
Internal use: pour 150 ml boiling water over 1 teaspoon of leaves, infuse for 10 to 15 minutes, filter. Drink 3 to 4 cups a day.
External use: 2 teaspoons in 100 ml boiling water, infuse for 10 to 15 minutes. Use as a gargle.
No side effects in normal doses. In overdose: toxic effects of thujone (dizziness, convulsions). Do not use internally during pregnancy.
