Constituents:
The root contains essential oil with alkylphthalides responsible for the characteristic “Maggi” aroma, as well as other components including furanocoumarins and volatile acids.
Lovage
Levisticum officinale KOCH
Effects and Use:
The root is used internally as a tea for its diuretic effect, promoting water excretion with relatively low salt loss (water diuresis), likely due to its essential oil content. It must not be used in cases of acute kidney inflammation or impaired kidney function due to its locally irritating effects. Lovage root is often part of bladder and kidney tea blends for flushing therapy and prevention of kidney gravel. For digestive purposes, fresh lovage (Maggikraut) is used in cooking.
Tea Preparation:
Pour 150 ml boiling water over 1 teaspoon of finely chopped root. Cover and steep for 10 minutes, strain.
Drink one cup between meals.
